  16. tuxguys says:

Ella, with the exception of Louis, the single greatest jazz musician of all time.

Who knew that Phillips, as a young man, looked so much like Kevin Spacey?

Prez and Porkpie, without whom Bird (part 1, great to see this) would not exist.

With the exception of Buzzy Drootin, never have I ever seen a musician have so much fun playing, so much sheer joy, as Buddy Rich.
(written after seeing parts 1 and 2 in order)

Check out the obvious continuity blooper. At 5:30, just at the band starts playing with Flip Phillips and Harry Edison, Lester Young is wearing a dark suit with a light shirt. In the next shot, at 5:35, he’s wearing a light suit with a dark shirt. This combo switches back and forth. This clip must have been shot over 2 days.

Unfortunately we have had a few generations who have no concept of music. If the rhythm is not louder than all the rest of the instruments, they can’t hear it.

  27. casch0101 says:

OMG!!! Simply beautiful. These ABSOLUTELY UNIQUE AND GREAT artists make jazz sound simple and easy. That’s far from the case. There are about 25.000 hours of practice/playing in the background of such musicians. Neurologically, it has been proven by specialists in music/neurology/psychology that you can fully grasp your instrument starting at 10.000 hours of practice left behind.

    @jobidaker

Making the simple complicated is commonplace; making the complicated simple, awesomely simple, that’s creativity.

    —Charles Mingus

  33. noudthe3rd says:

Fitzgerald’s skatting is the definite highlight imo.

  34. mikeao54 says:

@jobidaker The true sign of a great artist is one who makes it look easy. To the fan it needs to appear simple and that’s a good thing.

  35. fatheadthedog says:

the Other tenor player on the last clip??

  36. avenlac says:

Birds smirking at ‘Bean’ having to lip sync his solo and probably wondering how to bluff it when it’s his turn.

  37. PaGoO says:

It’s great to have the full session and ont the sample usually shown in documentaries about Jazz…

@selmansax He never knew how to read music and knew all the Big Band arrangements by heart…Buddy is just not like the rest of us

  42. selmansax says:

I think when people listen to those Buddy Rich bus “rant” tapes they should put it in context, its not simply a madman flying off the handle. He wasnt lying when he said he had played with the best people in the business.

  43. fethi1977 says:

  49. kingny17 says:

as a testament to that statement. when you type in the first three letters of hanks name hannah montana comes up. priorities much?
