Anyone who has navigated the dating scene knows the challenges of finding a good match. It can sometimes feel that the dating field is more like a mine field. From the immature to the egomaniac, to the careless or the clueless, the old saying that you have to kiss a lot of frogs to find your prince is often true. When things don’t work out, at best you spend a dull dinner date trying not to nod off into your appetizer. At worst, however, there’s the chance of finding yourself paired with a person who turns out to be unstable or dangerous. Even the most intuitive person can be easily fooled by a charming personality, so it’s important to not rely only on your instincts when accepting a date. Instead, develop a habit of practicing safe dating practices that can go further in keeping you safe.

The best way to protect yourself is to develop a good vetting process. Ideally, only date people you already know or who is well-known by a trusted friend or family member. While the chance encounter is often considered romantic, it’s also far more risky. Predators know exactly what to say or do to make you drop your guard, so assuming you can identify one by his public behavior is a mistake. But don’t just assume because you have mutual friends, that this person’s true personality is known. Before accepting a date, ask those friends what they know about this person, his or her dating history, and how long they have known them. A person deemed a “fun” guy by your friends, but who has a string of bad relationships or lost jobs, may have a hidden side.

Online dating is a popular method to meet others, in part because chatting online lets you get to know a person safely before meeting them face-to-face. However, it is far too common that the person we’ve come to know online is very different in person. Aside from jokes about online dates using a decades-old photo for their profile, talking via email or chat allows a person to edit their behavior in a way they are unable to do in person. Don’t assume anyone you’ve met online is who or what they say they are. Never provide anyone online with your full name, address or phone number. If you choose to meet, always meet somewhere in public like a coffee shop or theater.

Regardless of how you meet, protecting your personal information initially is always a good step. If someone asks for your number, offer instead your email address. Blocking emails is easier than dodging phone calls, and if things go bad, emails can be helpful in seeking assistance from the police.

Most importantly, remember that a decent person will understand your taking these steps to protect yourself. Anyone who questions your actions, becomes angry, or attempts to persuade you to “just trust them,” is likely the type of person from whom these steps are meant to protect you.

A recent headline from NBC Los Angeles read “Can’t We Build Cars the Way We Make Chips?” The premise of the article was that we could hire a few computer aided draftsmen to put automobile designs onto a computer, and then have the car manufactured overseas, and this would result in a healthy auto industry.

This is now how much of the U.S. semiconductor chip industry works, but actually, much of the engineering and drafting is also being outsourced overseas.

Companies like AT&T, LSI Logic, Hewlett-Packard and others no longer manufacture anything. They are “fabless”, meaning they hire a third party foundry overseas to manufacture something for them, and then they put their name on it. Apple’s iPod and Macintosh (MAC) are examples. On the products box, it says “Designed by Apple in California Assembled in China”. Apple does not have a factory in China.

Apple does not make chips.

We now outsource almost anything. Last year some Jack in the Box fast food franchises tested a process where the order was taken at the drive through window by an operator more than 8000 miles away. The customers were never aware, except for a few complaints about the operator’s non-southern accent (the test was in Charlotte, North Carolina). With a little automation, a fast food store could be staffed locally by as few as two people. One advantage of a centralized order processing system: it becomes easier to provide multi-lingual services.

An estimated 80% of tech support calls to AT&T are now answered in India and the Philippines. The Academy Award movie “Slumdog Millionaire” was about these tech support sweatshops. Dell Computers charges an additional fee if the customer wants tech support from a “North American” tech support person.

Doctors can now diagnose patients over the Internet.

Even remotely controlled surgery (also known as telesurgery) has been demonstrated through the use of robotics. One of the earliest remote surgeries was conducted in 2001, with a surgeon in New York performing a gallbladder operation on a patient in France. Dr. Jacques Marescaux, who led the team, said the operation demonstrated “the third revolution we’ve seen in the field of surgery in the past 10 years”. “It lays the foundations for the globalization of surgical procedures, making it possible to imagine that a surgeon could perform an operation on a patient anywhere in the world.” Doctors too can be outsourced 8000 miles away.

In China, people play for money the on-line games of “World of Warcraft” and “Magic Land” so that affluent online gamers, who lack the skill, don’t have to earn their way into the upper levels of the games. The locals call this occupation “gold farming”. We have even outsourced our play.

Whitacre to Lead GM

President Obama recently hired Ed Whitacre, the former head of AT&T, to take over General Motors (GM). Whitacre was chairman and CEO of AT&T from 1990 to 2007. During his tenure, Whitacre led the company through several acquisitions and sales, and earned the moniker “Mr. Outsource”, by eliminating all of AT&T’s manufacturing, and outsourcing as much as possible of the operation. Does this move mean that President Obama wants the auto industry to become “fabless” while subsidizing the operation by an estimated $ 20 billion?

GM’s reorganization plan calls for the closing of 16 manufacturing facilities in the U.S., including four assembly plants.

According to the Detroit News, “General Motors Corp. will shift more production of vehicles bound for the U.S. market to China, Mexico, South Korea and Japan, but will keep total imports at roughly one-third of all sales here.

In a confidential 12-page presentation to members of Congress, obtained by The Detroit News on Friday, GM said it will boost U.S. sales of vehicles built in those four countries by 98 percent — or about 365,000 vehicles — while shrinking production in Canada, Australia and European countries by about 130,000 vehicles.

GM also disclosed it will start importing vehicles made in China in 2011, reaching 51,546 vehicles in 2014. Imports from South Korea to the United States will jump from 36,967 vehicles in 2010 to 157,126 in 2014.”

The list of jobs that will ultimately prove difficult to outsource overseas: policemen, firemen, paramedics, plumbers, electricians, nurses, child-care, farmers, and landscapers. However some of these jobs could be filled by permitting more guest workers from Mexico and Central America into the country legally. The H-2A visa program has been updated to make it easier to hire foreign workers for this purpose.

Discretionary income is the money an individual has left for spending after basic needs are met such as food, housing and clothing, in other words the income left after all expenses needed to maintain one’s present standard of living. Discretionary income is the funds available for investing and saving and includes money spent on luxury items, holidays and non-essential goods and services. While non-discretionary income is mandatory as people have to eat, stay warm and be sheltered, discretionary income is optional. Families only spend money on things like fancy restaurants, dream holidays and expensive jewelry when there is money available to do so. When the economy is strong, discretionary spending tends to be high but when discretionary income falls, as during a recession or periods of high inflation, consumers will curb their spending on non-essential items.

Tiger Brands recently reported a marginal increase in revenue, which was negatively impacted by difficult trading conditions, price deflation in certain food commodities and promotional discounting in certain categories.

While the non-discretionary food division did well, its discretionary snacks and treats division saw flat revenue as it was negatively impacted by continued pressure on consumer discretionary spending. The share appears to offer value trading on a historical P/E of 12.8 times. However, given the uncertainties related to the sustainability of an economic recovery, we would only recommend longer term investors to buy the share. The share has a decent dividend yield of 4%. Technically, it is still in a bullish trend as the share price is trading above its moving averages.

Mr Price reported a strong set of results for the year ended March 2011, as retail sales exceeded R10-billion and profit attributable to shareholders exceeded the R1-billion mark for the first time. Trading on a historic PE ratio of 15.3 times we feel that the share is fairly valued and recommend longer term investors to hold their shares. The share price is underpinned by a solid dividend yield of 3.9%. Although the share price of Mr Price is trading above its 200-day moving average, it is trading below its shorter-term moving averages. It is trading in oversold territory and should move higher.

These two companies have a similar type of focus that are producing completely divergent results, proving that there are opportunities available for investors willing to do their homework.

In the world of finance a “share” refers to a unit of account for various financial instruments including stocks, limited partnerships, real estate investment trusts and mutual funds such as exchange traded funds or unit trusts. In certain parts of the world the word share refers to stocks and for all intents and purpose has replaced the word stock altogether.

While capitalism is not as ambitious as its defeated foe, Marxism, we are equally mistaken to believe, as the Marxists did, that it is a scientific and perfect solution for our future. Capitalism needs faith as much as are dogmatic religions do. Without out Faith in the future capitalism is doomed, and the current recession is a “dark night of the soul” for capitalism.

The world financial markets lost faith in our real estate market, and the complex derivatives that it had invested so heavily in. Quickly the whole house of cards began to collapse, and now it is being held up with toothpicks, slowly stabilizing, but nonetheless, fragile.

The current bull market on Wall Street, and the recuperation of the commodities markets? Do we believe them? If we don’t we are in trouble.

I think there are serious doubts about the core numbers. Compare it to a couple where one has had a wild affair and the other partner finds out, and after a very big crisis, they try and make it work again. We are in the “lets make it work period”, but serious doubts remain. Without trust, a couple is doomed, and without faith in the future, capitalism is doomed. How do we restore faith? How would a couple do it? With big gestures, flowers, jewelry, trips, lots of phone calls and messages. How does a world regain faith in an economy? Lots of good numbers….

GDP, inflation, unemployment, real estate prices, etc..

Wall Street has almost single handedly orchestrated a worldwide financial crisis. They created financial products that were backed up buy the real estate bubble. When the bubble burst, so did their math, and the whole deck of cards collapsed. But imagine if we had faked the numbers. If all public (and the most important private) data providers just lied, and said the real estate market had flattened, reached its peak, but prices were holding firm at the top, I think the whole crisis could have been averted…temporarily.

This would have saved the world financial sector a big headache. If people were convinced that prices were holding, there would have been no financial crisis, and the recession would have been a light one at worst.

Kevin Phillips describes very well in his Harpers article from May of 2008 how the US Government has been cooking the numbers since the Kennedy administration. Kevin Phillips Harpers Article

“Were mainstream interest rates to jump into the 7 to 9 percent range-which could happen if inflation were to spur new concern-both Washington and Wall Street would be walking in quicksand. The make-believe economy of the past two decades, with its asset bubbles, massive borrowing, and rampant data distortion, would be in serious jeopardy. The U.S. dollar, off more than 40 percent against the euro since 2002, could slip down an even rockier slope.”

And the pre-crash inflation rate, without pre-Clinton adjustments would have been close to 10%, meaning real interest rates would have been in the mid teens. Not surprising to see now that we were living a real lie, it was all fake, interest rates, inflation, not to mention GDP.

Phillips continues.

“Undermeasurement of inflation, in particular, hangs over our heads like a guillotine. To acknowledge it would send interest rates climbing, and thereby would endanger the viability of the massive buildup of public and private debt (from less than $ 11 trillion in 1987 to $ 49 trillion last year) that props up the American economy.”

So what do we do now? Tell all, and hope we are forgiven? Or keep lying. I say we keep lying. If the other partner is really in love (and they are, who wants to give up 60 years of “good living”?) Mr. Obama, please, tell us the numbers are much better than they are, start us on one hell of a recovery. It worked very well, especially in the 90′s and post 9/11 period, no reason to think she will believe this was our last fling with the cute young blonde intern. “It will never happen again, I promise babe!” But this time, when the going gets good, we must make the fundamental changes necessary to really put on us a steady course.

And what would those be? First, a single payer health care plan, reducing our health care costs by at least 5%. That will put some reality back into inflation and GDP. Second, we need to make massive investments in new energy before oil takes off again, as it will as we approach peak oil. Third, reduce substantially our military spending to reflect a new world order, and use that cut to reduce the budget.

Once these massive changes are implemented, maybe we can pull back the curtain and show the real economy behind curtain Number 1 and hope that with such massive changes, we will be able to dissolve the old lies into something fundamentally very different.

If world oil production remains flat, and demand recuperates to it pre-crash growth of almost 2% a year, we will soon have a major worldwide energy crisis on our hands that will make the subprime crisis seem like a little turbulence. Mr. Obama, tell us some lies, but then please do what you have to do in the meantime, and do it quickly.

Increase Traffic to Web Site, Mr Sulu

Increase traffic to web site is not unfortunately a command we can give our computer. Even James T. Kirk couldn’t do that. Achieving this goal is going to take money, time or both. So first off, we are going to have to know which of these resources we have most of – and how best to use them.

We are told constantly that it’s all about traffic, aren’t we? Increase traffic to web site – make money. That’s a half truth. It’s about targeted traffic, and what you do with that traffic when it arrives. But the conversion ‘story’ – though critical – is for another day.

Let’s look at paid traffic methods. If money isn’t a huge issue and you have some ‘risk’ funds available to learn pay per click marketing, then it is a great way not only to increase traffic to your website but to collect precious data about keyword performance.

Pay per click delivers to you within a few hours the sort of hard data that offline marketers can only dream about.

Once you know which of your keywords are bringing buyers – thanks to your diligent tracking activities (another subject for another day!) – you can enter your ‘increase traffic to web site free of charge’ phase.

Once you know which keywords are bringing visitors that either buy your product, opt into your subscriber list via a form box and ethical bribe on your squeeze page, or preferably both, you can start generating free ongoing permanent targeted traffic using those high-performing keywords. I would only add that you must put in some time to study pay per click before throwing money at it. It’ll bite you otherwise.

So, Mr Chekov, increase traffic to web site for free. Aye aye, Captain. First off you can write articles, optimised around those ‘star’ keywords and submit them to directories such as EzineArticles.com and Goarticles.com.

You can write press releases via sites such as prweb.com – again to generate organic, free traffic in the search engines.

You can set up a WordPress.org blog, with your star keywords in the title, and upload some posts that are optimised around other good keywords. You can promote this blog – that can contain links to your product/s as well as an opt-in form – by commenting on relevant blogs and forums, putting a ‘signature’ at the bottom of each comment with a link to your blog or to your site.

You can put links on Twitter, Facebook and deploy social bookmarking also, as well as creating a ‘lens’ on Squidoo and a ‘Hub’ on Hubpages.
