A CITIZEN’S DIWALI DAY THOUGHTS

Today Diwali – the festival of lights – greetings flow across the length and breadth of the country and abroad, wherever Indians are. No need however to personally convey the messages since nowadays SMS are in vogue and profitable. With the increasing mobility of mobile phones, number of mesages are bound to have a quantum leap. No one cares much about the satisfaction and cheer each derives while conveying such messages through one’s own voice whatsoever. Like any ritual these conveyances too remain a ritual. No need blaming anyone in this new era of information and knowledge revolution something more than sufficient. The family get-togethers during such festivals like Diwali have almost come down to zero level, thanks to nuclear families. With the fast disappearing joint family system each member of a family lives apart from each other, each at faraway place sometimes even abroad.

The elders often end up in old-age homes with nostalgic memories, their only consolation.

Besides ordinary citizens like us, the rulers at the top echelons too convey messages, Prime Minister, President, Vice-President, Governors and Chief Ministers without being even aware of such festivals, convey their respective offices where everything is being diarised and get them published on the auspicious day in prominent media across the country. The messages often go on thus on the ocassion of Diwali – the festival of lights – symbolising the victory of good over evil, ‘ we join you in your celebration of the festival and wish you life-long prosperity and harmony, where victory prevails over evil, where people live across the country happily and with more than sufficient satisfaction, where harmony prevails among them’, they care not that which they ought to take care of before passing such messages as they are entrusted with that by the same citizens.

Our nation in fact runs through a dark tunnel with many a problem of immediate response awaiting to be settled.

True, no denying the fact that much progress has been achieved especially on the economic front but it is a sad truth that the growth so far achieved is a lop-sided growth due to the distorted policies of the govts that ruled and the one that now rules our nation.

Hence we are back to square one when taken in its totality – the poverty, malnourishment, health, education, infrastructure all still badly in need of atttention. Remote corners of our nation, sorry, not only the remote corners, even the cities believed to have developed, are in a pitiful condition with crater-filled roads, lack of irrigation and transport facilities, millions still living without cover over their heads in the congested cities due to the massive inflows of job-seeking educated and illiterate people alike, acute scarcity of pure drinking water, poor state of drainage systems, lack of sanitation facilities, and add to the woes the anti-social elements, terror elements like eagles always waiting to prey upon peace-loving citizens, the under-world, erosion of morals and ethical values, sorry sir, the list is unending.

Here I am forced to write about an incident, an unfortunate incident which happened during the rule of that ‘Iron Lady’ of India, Indira Gandhi. While the nation was reeling under famine with teeming millions spending sleepless nights with empty bellies, on a rescue mission she went on a trip to USA to meet the then President Richard Nixon – don’t know whether the fellow is still alive – and pleaded before him to extend a helping hand for the sake of the people of her country. An arrogant Nixon, reportedly, ruthlessly turned down her request under some pretext and Indira Gandhi had to leave disillusioned, desperate and depressed. The man’s antagonism towards her was notorious, and upon her return to India he had reportedly made a nasty comment about the respected Prime Minister of our nation, Indira Gandhi. The man later flowed out as the Water-Gate broke-open in an unceremonious fashion one fine morning.

Before and after her death we had Prime Ministers Jawahar Lal Nehru down ManMohan Singh. Though the Nehruvian policies done away with the enthronement of P.V.Narasimha Rao, who whisked away the gentle doctor, noted economist Dr.ManMohan Singh from World Bank, who incidentally had served as RBI Governor, before flying to US and appointed Finance Minister under Mr.Rao. The doctor in the capactiy of Finance Minister and with the blessings of Narasimha Rao overhauled the entire economy and paved the way for neo-liberal economic reforms. Foreign Direct Investments were gladly welcomed, the centralised economy deregulated, thus extending helping hands to the industry, trade and business leaders more freedom loosening the complicated procedures to venture into their areas of interest. His reforms, though emerged successful, the benefits reached the industrial barons and business community only. They benefitted abundantly, they were encouraged, they were extended many tax benefits, even tax exemptions and our economist doctor played ignorance of the teeming millions still reeling under poverty. His theory that along with the growth the benefits would trickle down to the masses, but so far no trickling down worth noticing till date visible.

After Narasimha Rao, the NDA alliance under BJP led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Lal Krishna Advani came to power with assurances of bettering the lot of poor across the country and upon occupying the saddle they too went on the ManMohan Singh way arguing that economic reforms are irriversible and their reforms too benefitted the industrial tycoons and business community. Under NDA too the poor remained poorer and the rich richer. The alliance ruled six years and with complacency,declared elections with the India-Shining campaign flashing across visual media intermittently, plunged into the election mode – their over-confidence was beyond imagination and as the D-Day approached, they bit the dust at the hustings something of a shock still haunting them.

The election produced a fractured verdict with Congress emerging with more MPs got the opportunity stake claim. But it was a tedious task to cobble together a majority and the Left forces were determined to keep the BJP away from the scene, the then Secretary, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Harkishan Singh Surjt not minding his age-related handicaps shuttled between the offices of other entities bringing them together under one umbrella to help the Congress, the alliance named UPA I to stake claim before the President with Leftists supporting from outside.

Though the UPA I later ditched CPI(M) reason being the determined and stubborn attitude of Dr.Singh when the issue of passage of Civil-Nuclear Deal came up with CPI(M) turning against it. Dr.Singh got it passed alligning with two opportunist parties always sitting on the fence. But the Leftists could till it withdrew power to the govt prevail upon the UPA I govt to enact certain social welfare measures for the power. Though Congress later claimed credit and still claims, fact remains fact, the credit actually goes to Leftists.

In the subsequent election, the UPA II came to power (thanks to the Leftists),now Dr.Singh and his cohorts have turned arrogant with not even a single welfare measure getting enacted though talks of a Food Security Measure Bill in a distorted fashion going to be presented in the winter session of Parliament. Besides corruption at several levels has eaten into the vitals of the society, the CWG scam, Adarsh Housing Welfare scheme scam, the 2G spectrum scandal, only a few but to the tune of thousands of crores of rupees and the govt reluctant to book the culprits.

What about the basic realities still remain unresolved whether it would be resolved ever, however let’s say in unison Happy Diwali, after all it is a matter of ritual.

Whatever your reason for starting a blog, you’re going to want to start off on the right foot and get some great blogging advice, and that’s where this article can help.

Blogging isn’t a difficult thing to learn, as a matter of fact, most people can easily learn all they need to know in an hour or so. Here are some key points to keep in mind as you begin your online blogging adventure:

1. You can start your own blog for free. There are many blogging platforms that will host your blog for you for no charge, WordPress.com and Blogger.com are two of the most popular. Even with the free versions, you’ll still have access to hundreds of different designs, or themes, that you can use for your blog. You can also use plugins and widgets, basically just like apps for a smart phone, that will allow you to do many different things with your blog, these are usually also free.

2. The topic of your blog should be based on two major considerations: what do you love and whether or not you want to use your blog to start an online business. Sometimes these two things will overlap, your business blog can be about something that you love. Other times you won’t be able to make money with your hobby because there just aren’t enough other people who love that topic enough to pay for products related to it.

3. When you start your blog, especially a business blog, you will want people to return frequently and read your new posts. In order to keep them coming back you’ll want to make sure that you make your posts and the other information on your blog related to the topic of your blog. For example, if your blog is about gardening you really don’t want to start going off on tangents about all kinds of other topics. Occasionally it’s ok to stray a little bit but the bottom line is that the readers of your blog joined because they were interested in that topic, so give them what they want.

4. If you want to use your blog to make money and start a business you should consider buying your own domain name and get your own hosting account. Don’t worry if this sounds foreign to you, it’s easy and inexpensive enough. The reason this is important is that if you stick with the free versions you don’t actually own anything, not the name of your blog or that little piece of internet ‘real estate’ your blog sits on. That’s not a good way to structure your business. Buy your domain name and get your blog hosted and you will own it and you can decide what you want to do with it.

I hope this blogging advice has helped you a little bit. The most important thing to remember is that you should have fun with your blog. This is a great way to express yourself so make the most out of it.

Dangerous Thought Patterns To Avoid
Do you know that most of the things that make us anxious and worried are just the by-products of a poorly trained, unconditioned mind? This means that there are ways to keep your head positive and unclouded. All you have to do is train and condition your mind, and the best way to do is through subliminal programming.

This involves sending messages to your subconscious to train it to work in a certain way and to follow a set direction towards the positive, instead of towards the negative.

But in order to fully condition the mind to be positive, you need to watch out for some dangerous thought patterns. These are common ways of how the mind works; we often have no control over them so we let them lead us to anxiety and needless worry. Here they are:

1. Youre not a fortuneteller. People make a habit out of predicting whats going to happen to them each time they take action or make a decision. For example, you just got a new job, and you start imagining all the ways you could possibly mess up your new opportunity. We often hear ourselves saying I knew this was going to happen or I know that this will end badly. This shows us that we seem wired to expect the worst outcomes. And the worst part is, the mind works to make what it believes in a reality, so what you expect simply happens.

2. Making assumptions. Heres another fickle habit: assuming what other people are thinking without really hearing them say such things. When you assume, it triggers a reaction in your head. And if what you were thinking is wrong, then your reaction is also uncalled for. This is often the first cause of trouble that could have been avoided in the first place.

Aside from that, making assumptions give rise to fear, self-doubt, low self-esteem, and a degraded confidence.

3. Making generalizations. Another bad habit to avoid is when you generalize your negative experiences and actions. This often happens when we make the wrong call or mess things up. We start thinking how we never get anything right or how we always make mistakes. Mistakes happen from time to time, but not always. They are just really easy to see, and focusing on them, making them look bigger than they really are, will only lead to anxiety and negative self-image.

4. Do not label yourself. Labeling yourself as the girl who always makes mistakes or the guy who always gets dumped will make you turn out exactly that way. Why? Because the mind works to make its beliefs a reality. The mind cant stand it when what it believes in is not consistent with the reality. Thus, it works hard to maintain the label that you place on yourself.

5. Mountains out of anthills. Yes, sometimes you come across problems that seem like mountains that it feels like you cant get out from under them. But if you keep on thinking of them as huge problems, the bigger they get, and the less capable you will feel about solving them. This stirs up feelings of helplessness and inferiority. Instead of thinking about your huge problem, just get on with solving it already.

Adult Thoughts on Childhood Thinking

For many decades child development experts have held the belief that children are far less intelligent than adults; that they don’t understand many facets of life and are largely unaware of them too. Professor of Psychology at the University of California, Alison Gopnik, has set out to change that dated view of childhood cognition in her books ‘How Babies Think’ and ‘The Philosophical Baby’ amongst others, and it’s all to do with imagination.

Alison maintains the view that babies are ‘useless’. There’s no doubting that the human race has the longest time from conception to a child being able to look after themselves and in an evolutionary sense that doesn’t make much sense. To be able to survive better we should become independent as soon as possible, perhaps once we’re weaned from our mother’s milk, yet it’s only 17 years later that we’re considered to be capable.

Alison wanted to look closer at the reasons for this and carried out experiments of infants of various ages, that went deeper into their cognition than experts had ever been before.

What Alison and various other child psychologists and researchers found was that children do think and understand complex thoughts, but they do it in a very different way to adults. Incredibly, babies have a better understanding and memory of very complex sequences of events. One experiment involved a researcher showing children a complex set of events that would turn a machine on or off. The children repeatedly followed the sequence correctly, having only been shown once and it was concluded that they don’t have a full and rounded understanding of how that sequence works, but somehow their brains compute it subconsciously.

Now you’re probably thinking ‘why?’ From the outset it’s not clear why babies need this heightened intelligence whilst everything is being done for them, but most people can relate quite closely to it.

Have you ever thought, or said out loud to friends “wouldn’t it be lovely to be a child again? With no cares in the world?”. Certainly most of us have. The ‘useless’ child isn’t useless just for fun; children are actually learning very important things about the world while their parents take care of sustaining their survival, finding food, keeping them clean, etc.

Toddlers of as young as 18 months are already starting to learn the difference between morality driven by empathy and morality driven by rules, and this learning can be clearly seen at a number of stages. Take a child at the ‘terrible twos’ stage for example. They’re terrible because they do ‘bad’ things despite knowing their parents won’t like it. To adults it seems calculated and mischievous, but the two year old has only just learned that other people are capable of different values and desires. They’re testing this absurdity to try and understand it.

From studying child cognition much more closely than ever before and looking at children from a very different angle, Alison Gopnik and her team of researchers have discovered something incredible about the way that their minds work. Quite how this will affect the way that parenting and childcare evolves remains unclear, but it certainly gives us pause for thought when playing with our own children.
