Positive Affirmations – The Power of Your Words

You use positive affirmations to help you to achieve your goals. And fundamentally, positive affirmations are just words but it is the way in which you combine those words and the actual words that you use in creating your affirmations that mean the difference between succeeding in achieving your goals or failing.

The words you use, both spoken and unspoken, literally control the results you achieve in your life. As Bill Bartmann said:

“The words that we use to describe the thing we want predicates more often than not our own success or own failure.”

Yet, far too many people do not pay attention to the words they use to describe themselves far less the words they use to describe what they desire. In many cases the words that people use to describe themselves are often negative and erode their self-esteem making it even more challenging to achieve the results that they desire.

As Gloria Steinem said:

“Self-esteem isn’t everything; it’s just that there’s nothing without it.”

They then compound matters by describing what they want as a goal. Now some individuals are very clear about what a goal is and what the term goal means to them. They are also very confident about achieving the goals that they set. However, there are others to whom the word goal actually has negative connotations.

To this group of individuals a goal is something which is generally beyond their reach. It’s something they aspire to but deep down inside they do not expect to achieve it. So they set a goal and they fulfil their prophecy that they will not achieve it. In other words they self-sabotage their attempts to accomplish their goal. It then becomes one more on a long list of goals set but not achieved.

So the next time they set a goal their sub-conscious mind checks their personal history of goal setting and goal achievement, sees that the norm is that majority of goals set are not achieved and so again sabotages the individual’s effort to achieve this new goal as well.

A pattern is established and failing to achieve your goals becomes a habit because the sub-conscious mind resists change. It doesn’t like to upset the status quo.

Maybe this has happened to you and if not to you personally, you can probably think of someone to whom this happens time and time again. They set goals and are very enthusiastic for a while but before long the goal is abandoned. They don’t even go the distance in their attempt to achieve their goal. Or they repeatedly lament about the number of projects they start but don’t finish.

If you do fall into this category and you’re using positive affirmations with respect to “goals” you’re aiming to achieve, then it’s likely that you will be disappointed.

There are several different ways to overcome this problem. Bill Bartmann suggests that instead of setting goals you make a promise. Now, admittedly, some people are just as bad at keeping their promises but, generally, when someone makes a promise it is a serious commitment. To some individuals a promise is almost sacred. They would rather die than break a promise.

If you fall into this latter category then you know that when you make a promise that:

1. You don’t do so lightly, and

2. You do everything in your power to fulfil your promise.

As a result, you know and those close to you know that even if you don’t fulfil your promise that you would have done all that you could to carry out your promise and that nothing more could realistically be asked of you. However, because you pull the stops out when you do make a promise your track record for fulfilling your promises is high.

Thus, when your sub-conscious mind learns that you’ve made a new promise. It sends out the red alert. And it starts to work flat out, working with you rather than against you, to help you achieve your goal and manifest your promise or positive affirmation.

If you’ve gotten into the habit of creating positive affirmation statements to support your desired results in life, you’re probably noticing some changes already. Yet sometimes at first your feedback comes in fits and spurts. Something great will happen, and then things will taper off for a bit. It can get frustrating. Fortunately, there’s usually something else to tweak. Try these 3 tips for intermediate “affirmers.”

1. Keep tabs on your everyday language. Sure, when you started out it was great to have a couple sentences to call on when things began to feel rough. Maybe you even got into a habit of beginning or ending your day with affirmations. Or you taped them up on the bathroom mirror, on the cover of your journal, or on the dashboard of your car. Those are all great ways of keeping a planned statement present in your consciousness.

Yet everyday language counts, too.

Remember that any firm statement is an affirmation. Begin to monitor your day-to-day conversation, both inside and out, for statements that conflict with the positive affirmation you’ve chosen.

Let’s be clear:

* If your planned statement affirms abundance, but you spend a lot of time telling the kids “we can’t afford it,” then you’ve got a conflict. Try this instead: “Let’s get some other things today and put that on our list for another time.”

* If your planned statement affirms comfort in your body, yet your inner conversation routinely says “My back is killing me,” then you’ve got a conflict. Try this instead: “As I breathe deeply, the muscles in my back relax.”

* If your planned statement affirms a happy relationship with your spouse, yet you secretly criticize his evenings spent zoning out in front of the TV, then you’ve got a conflict.

Try this instead: “I appreciate how hard Jim works all day. It’s great when we find ways to relax and unwind together.”

2. Expect your behavior to change. The language of an affirmation is extremely powerful. Yet the words themselves are not magic. It’s more about the context they create. No matter what your inside conversation, if you rigorously continue doing the same old things, you will continue to produce the same old results.

The positive statements are meant to inspire you to come up with fresh solutions and follow through on them. Some of the ideas that “pop” into your head may seem strange. They will surely be different from the old ideas you entertained in the past. That’s because you are now moving into a slightly different world — a world of great possibility!

Build some credibility with yourself by trying out a few of the crazy ideas you get. As you do, you’ll no doubt find that some work better than others. No matter. Follow through as best you can on the the ideas that begin working for you. Once you start to see results, take notice. Your affirmation is taking on material form. It’s also becoming more believable.

* You begin to believe that you will one day be able to buy the kids that gadget they asked about because it’s already becoming a bit easier to manage the essentials. Didn’t you just get to payday with cash left in your wallet? Darn tootin’ you did!

* You begin to believe your back will relax as you exhale tension because after the massage therapist finished with you last week, you felt great for two whole days. It’s possible!

* You begin to believe that you and your spouse will enjoy the benefits of a closer relationship because last Tuesday after work, you spent some time on the couch watching TV with him. And then didn’t he say that it had felt nice? Yep. Well, it’s a start!

3. Consider affirming your state. State means how you “are.” When you “are” abundance, or health, or connectedness, you make choices that match your experience. Of course when you “are” scarcity, or illness, or separation, then your choices match that experience as well.

Observe a role model to see how they are being. Let’s say your role model is confident and charismatic. Fine. Affirm that you are confident and charismatic. Better yet, affirm “I am confidence and charisma.” Using language, bring yourself into the same state of being that your role model enjoys.

You will not turn into your role model. But before you know it, you are likely to begin making the same type of choices that they would make if they were in your situation. The most likely outcome of that strategy, of course, is that your situation will begin to look a little more like theirs. If you’ve chosen wisely, that’s bound to be a very good thing!

Recent medical studies have shown that a regular practice of yoga and meditation is effective at lowering levels of anxiety.

Excessive anxiety can be alleviated through a slow, gentle yoga practice focusing on postures that calm the heart and the mind, balance the emotions, and release body tension.

Pranayama (yogic breathing) and meditation will also be helpful to calm the mind and body, and to reduce stress and negative thinking.

Physical sensations alone are not the core of the illness. Fearful thoughts, unpleasant emotions, avoidant behaviors, disturbing sensations, and deteriorating relationships all collude with one another to maintain panic. Thoughts such as the fear of dying or of having a mental breakdown are common. Even mild anxiety can trigger an attack, and any disturbing emotion can be interpreted as a precursor to full-fledged panic.

Yoga tells us that before searching for a cure it is important to look deeply into the nature and causes of illness. It is also important to get an idea of how things will be when symptoms have been removed, because otherwise we may have illusions about what recovery will be like. For example, eliminating anxiety is not the outcome of treatment for panic-the outcome is the ability to manage anxious feelings.

Yoga training can be particularly useful here, for yoga teaches us how to interact with the nervous system. If we want to soothe and strengthen it, we need to learn deep, relaxed yogic breathing. Regardless of the pathways of arousal, breathing is the language of nervous system balance and control.

Practicing yoga is a good way to learn breathing skills, for it is a gradual process, often needing considerable support over a period of time. Yoga teachers quickly recognize when a student is having trouble (as is often the case with panickers), and they know a wide variety of alternate practices that will help the student master breathing skills.

Yoga psychology also suggests many techniques for resolving conflicts, including acknowledging and accepting the conflict in all its depth; recognizing the need for some kind of change; resisting the inclination to act out feelings or to do nothing; exploring alternatives; communicating with others without blaming them; accepting feedback from others; using discrimination in accepting or rejecting alternatives; surrendering to necessary losses; acting with determination; accepting outcomes with equanimity; working calmly on a problem even if a negative outcome, or no outcome, seems inevitable; and letting intuition suggest new possibilities.

These strategies are derived from what in yoga are called the yamas and niyamas-the attitudes toward life that are the basis of all yoga practices.

Trianga Mukhaikapada Paschimottanasana :

Trianga means three limbs or parts thereof. In this posture the three parts are the feet, knees and the buttocks. Mukhaikapada corresponds to the face touching one leg. In Paschimottanasana the back of the whole body is intensely stretched.

Technique :

Sit on the floor with the legs stretched straight in the front.

Bend the right leg at the knee and move the right foot back. Place the right foot at the side of the right hip joint, keep the toes pointing back and rest them on the floor. The inner side of the right calf will touch the outer side of the right thigh.

Balance in this position throwing the weight of the body on the bent knee. In the beginning body tilts to the side of the outstretched leg, and the foot of the outstretched leg also tilts outwards. Learn to balance in this position, keeping the foot and toes stretched and pointing forward.

Now hold the left foot with both the palms, gripping the sides of the sole if you can then extend the trunk forward and hook the wrists round the outstretched left foot. Take two deep breaths.

Join the knees, exhale and bend forward. Rest first the forehead, then the nose next the lips and ultimately the chin of the left knee. To achieve this widen the elbows and push the trunk forward with an exhalation.

Do not rest the left elbow on the floor. In the beginning one looses the balance and topples over to the side of the extended leg. The trunk should therefore be slightly bent towards the side of the bent leg and the weight of the body should be taken by the bent knee.

Stay in this position from half a minute to a minute, breathing evenly.

Inhale, raise the head and trunk, release the hands, straighten the right leg and come to the position.

Repeat the pose on the other side, keeping the right leg stretched out on the ground, bending the left knee and placing the left foot by the left hip joint. Stay for the same length of the time on both the sides.

Positive Changes With Positive Thoughts

Changing how you do things in life can be a very daunting task. The fact of the matter is, however, that everyone has at least one area that they need to change. It could be that you need to work on your temper and how you react to others. Someone else may need to stop drinking as much, while another may need to be more outgoing in order to get a new job. Whatever it is that needs change, or tweaking in our lives we should always be striving to become better people. We are only given one chance at life, so we should make every attempt to make it the best life we possibly can.

One of the ways we can achieve change in our lives is by learning to change how we think. What I mean by this is that we are capable of changing how we think about any aspect of our lives. By changing how we think, we can effectively change how we do things as well. It may be as small as removing a couple of letters from one sentence in our head such as, “I cannot do this”, to, “I can do this.” This probably sounds very much like a simple positive thinking method.

If it does, it is because in many ways it is.

I used this method of change when I talked to clients as a Work Adjustment Specialist a little over a year ago. The clients I was dealing with had various disorders such as bi-polar, schizophrenia, depression, and other various mental disorders. My job was to help them to gain a perspective and ability to become productive and effective workers in the workplace. As I talked to these people I began to see a common trait amongst all of them. The way they were thinking was very self defeating. They were essentially talking themselves out of being able to succeed. So as I counseled with them I encouraged them to try and retrain their brain into thinking more positively.

Instead of thinking, “I cannot do this”, think instead, “This may be difficult, but I CAN do this.” As some of my clients began to do this, I was able to see an improvement not only in their attitude, but also in their quality of work.

It does not really matter what aspect of life you are dealing with when using this method of self-help. If you realize that change is needed on your behalf, it will take a change of attitude more than likely to ensure success. By retraining your brain into thinking more positively and not so negatively, you can nearly always overcome any obstacle in life. Let’s face it, one of the main reasons people do not even attempt change to begin with is because they believe they cannot do it. In these cases, the person must first retrain his/her brain into believing that success is even possible. Then with each hurdle faced they must continue to retrain how they think in order to continue to overcome.

One of the great things about this is that the more a person does this, the less they will have to even think about doing it. We are creatures of habit. Because of this when we do something enough times it becomes a habit of which we no longer have to think about doing. We simply just do it. So the more you think positively about you and your life, the less you will have to convince yourself of it and the more you will simply believe it.

So if you are facing having to make a change in your life right now and are hesitant about it, begin by thinking in a positive way and believing you can. Once you have convinced yourself that you are capable of making the change, be sure to keep retraining your brain each time you hit an obstacle along the way. Continually tell yourself that you are not only capable of making this change in your life, but you are worth it as well. Good luck in your journey and remember, YOU CAN DO IT!

In my experience, it’s not about defending your position, it’s not about being a democrat or a republican or on the right or on the left, it has nothing to do with that. If we just hold on to our positions and fight for them, if we just all look out for our own selfish interest, if you look around, you can see what that looks like. All the trends on the planet are going like this, they’re going down, it’s because all of us haven’t learned to play well with others. I’m serious. If we could just learn to cooperate a little more with each other, and even more importantly, if political decisions were made based on what is for the highest and best good for everyone involved, it would take radical change across the planet. It would make everything easier, even if we all did that just a little bit more, where instead of trying to win an argument or prove a point, we simply ask ourselves, “Well, what is for the highest and best good for everyone involved?” If we all start living like that, even just a little more, there is a possibility for tremendous positive change. Positive Thinking – No Sweat

Karl Jung famously said “What you resist, persists”. You might not have heard of or know much about the Law of Attraction, but this basic statement demonstrates one of the Law’s key principles – whatever you think about you attract. And when this is something you really don’t want, you tend to think about it even more and with real feeling – which means you attract more of it, more quickly.

So how does this apply to the problem of excessive sweating or hyperhidrosis as it’s scientifically known? Well, if you suffer from this problem you probably don’t need me to tell you that when you start to sweat, you get stressed…which can make you sweat even more.

You become so conscious of your sweating that it is all you can think about, and you’re thinking about it with such intensity that, according to the Law of Attraction, it’s inevitable that you will sweat more.

Think about it, even when you’re not sweating, if you are going to work in an office all day, or are on your way out for a date, you probably have in your mind the worry that you will start sweating – even though it hasn’t actually happened yet.

So what does this worrying about sweating do? It keeps the problem in your mind and attaches a really strong emotion to it so in the end, you start to sweat.

The Law of Attraction would probably take a lot more than the space on this page to explain in detail, but if you can believe that thinking about the problem makes it worse, you can use the Law to your benefit.

If you give some feeling to more positive thoughts the Law says that this is what you will get.

If what you are wanting is to be sweat-free, confident and dry all day, then give some focus to that.

Visualise yourself in the office sat back in your chair with your arms behind your head and not a hint of perspiration showing on your shirt or blouse. Picture yourself on a fantastic date where you are able to get really close to your partner because you know your underarms are dry and fresh.

If you’ve ever heard of or used affirmations, these are a big part of using the Law to your benefit. By affirming, saying out loud or in your head, what you want the positive outcome to be, the Law will take notice and bring this outcome to you.

Affirmations should always be positive and in the present tense to be really effective, for example you could try saying this every morning before you go off to work. “I am confident and comfortable and my underarms are dry and fresh all day”.

If this is the first time you are hearing about the Law of Attraction it might be a bit difficult to believe that these principles will have any affect, but if you have faith in what you are saying and try it repeatedly, you should see an improvement. Even if you are a little bit skeptical, what have you got to lose?

Many of us have heard about positive affirmation and its wonders. It is a powerful way to develop positive attitude towards life. It aids in our growth and success. It is not a miracle but something that you can learn and inculcate within yourself. It is good way of boosting your energy levels and confidence. All you need to do is think positive. All our thoughts are randomly developed through our experiences which can be positive or negative. We need to transform all our thoughts into positive thoughts and become a positive thinker.

Positive affirmation can be learnt over time to turn you into a positive thinker. Few of the ways on how to think positive effectively are mentioned here.

Concentrate on things that you wish to achieve, all your goals and targets. Make a list in your mind. Identify what all you have already achieved and the things that you are still trying to succeed. Analyze the reasons that why you are unable to accomplish certain things.
Once identified, convince yourself that you would be able to do it. Do not allow any of your negative thoughts to stop you from convincing. Remember, your conviction and determination is of utmost importance. If you lack that then you have to develop it by thinking positively about it.
Now create short positive statements regarding what you want to be or wish to do. For example, if you wish to control your anger, then say statements like, ‘I am calm and patient person’. You should not say that, ‘I am not angry’. Make sure, you use present tense while you practice positive affirmation. Talk in a way that you would do if you converse with yourself using I, me, and mine etc.
Once you create the statements, you need to repeat them daily. This is to register them on to your subconscious mind because only then it will become part of your personality. There many ways as to how you can repeat them in order to develop positive thinking.
You can repeat them into your mind. But while you do this your negative thoughts hinder your thinking. You have to overcome them all. Therefore many people try writing their thoughts, may be twenty –forty times daily. Some make the recordings and listen to them. These ways force you to listen. Like, when you are writing you repeat what you are writing subconsciously.
Make this as a regular practice. You have taken years to develop as a person. So, changing you and especially inner you would be a challenging task. It would take time. Try at least for thirty days. The change would overwhelm you.

Positive affirmation is a wonderful way of creating positive attitude towards life with positive beliefs and energy. It would allow you to be a person you always wanted to be. It is though not an easy process but neither impossible. Be positive and work towards it. Take the simple steps towards being a positive, happy, energetic and confident person and success would automatically come to you.

Have you been trying to use positive affirmations wth no success? Make your efforts count and drive those positive, empowering statements home. If you cant seem to achieve success then perhaps there is something wrong with your technique. To be sure, here are three rules on how to properly and effectively use positive affirmations.

Positive affirmations are positive messages that are sent to the subconscious so that you will eventually take these messages as the truth. They are now quite popular and are being used in self help and personal development. When people want to change something or add something to make their lives more positive, they simply focus on positive affirmations.

The process of planting these affirmations into your head is sometimes referred to as affirmation imprinting. By definition, this is embedding the affirmations into your mind so deeply that your mind recognizes them as the truth, and any contrasting ideas are considered as lies and are automatically, without conscious prompting, rejected. Not only can affirmations bring a change, but they can also protect your mind from turning back to its old negative-thinking habits.

However, for positive affirmations to work, certain elements have to be present. Here are some rules on proper usage of these affirmations.

In using positive affirmations, the way that the affirmative sentence is constructed matters a lot. In fact, this is a make or break factor. If the sentence is incorrectly formed, even though it contains the right key words or delivers the right message, it wont work. So here are the rules:

Rule 1: No negative words.

Make sure that your sentences do not have any negative words. This is an often overlooked error in the use of positive affirmations. Most people want to get rid of negative things and habits in their lives in order to make their lives more positive. So they tend to focus on the thing or habit that has to disappear. By doing so, they can easily come up with a message that goes like I will not smoke anymore. But although the message is correct, the sentence does use the word not, which is considered a negative word. Other negative words include cannot or never.
So how can you rephrase that without using negative words? Heres an example: I am free from smoking.

Rule 2: Start with I or my.

Positive affirmations should start with personal pronouns pertaining to you so that they will take effect in your own life. These personal pronouns are I and my. They add a personal feel to the message so the message will involve you.

Rule 3: Use words that are easy to visualize.

Using words that are easy to interpret in the form of visual images is also crucial. You have to use words that strike up your imagery, words that make you imagine. This is why positive affirmations usually go hand in hand with visualization. Words that can be easily translated into image form tend to have a stronger impact on your mind.
