The 5 Basic Laws of Success

Depending on who you read, there are any number of “Laws of Success”; some authors focus on a few, others create several. Whether you are reading Brian Tracey, Og Mandino, John Maxwell, or any of the other writers out there, you will get the ones they feel are important.

To me, there are 5 “Laws”, if you will, that you can start with. These “Laws” are commonly accepted by most success experts; they are, in Stephen Covey’s terms, “self-evident” and “universal”. Even if you find others you like, starting with these five will certainly get you going.

The Law of Correspondence

The Law of Correspondence says that your outside reflects your inside. In other words, how you think is reflected in the circumstances of your life. Perhaps the best writing on this law is James Allen’s “As a Man Thinketh.” As a consequence of this law, if you want to change your life, you need to change your thoughts first.

The Law of Abundance

The Law of Abundance says that the world is big enough for both you and I to succeed.

The opposite of the Law of Abundance says that for one person to succeed, another must fail; this is the rule of Back-Stabbing. The Law of Abundance says that we all can succeed. Therefore, you need not envy anyone or steal your goods; the world will work with you. As a consequence, people can become successful by helping others become successful.

The Law of Cause and Effect

This law implies that everything has a cause. If you are not wealthy, sick, unhappy, unappreciated, or working in a job you hate, there is a cause. And, when combined with the Law of Abundance, that cause is not the outside world, but you.

Again, change yourself and you will cause the effect of changing your world. Tommy Newberry best expressed this with the title of his book “Success is Not an Accident.”

The Law of Attraction

The movie “The Secret” popularized this law. It basically states that you attract what you are. If you are positive, you will attract positive results; the reverse is also true. As a consequence, you cannot get what you are not. You cannot say “I will be positive when my results are positive”; the law works the other way. You need to be a positive person first, then you will get the positive results.

The Law of the Farm

This is also known as the Law of Growth. The premise of this law is that people’s circumstances are like crops on a farm. When a farmer plants a crop in the spring, he does not get a harvest the next day; he must let the crop grow and get his harvest in the fall. Similarly, you cannot change one day and expect success the next; you must persevere, keep working your plan, and you will get the results in due time. Stephen Covey talks about this law, as does Og Mandino. As a corollary, this law also says that you reap what you sow. Just a farmer who plants corn gets corn and not potatoes, you will receive the crop based on the seeds you plant. Positive seeds will generate positive results, and negative seeds will generate negative results.

While there is much that can be said about each of these laws, I feel that you already know them. What you may not be doing is using them properly, and I encourage you to study writings on each of these laws to determine how you can best use them.

The Secret of Success

I usually speak with many successful business people, I realized some important themes they have in common.

Through my observations and experiences, I have summarized these valuable things for putting anyone on the path to success.

First, if you want to be successful in business, find a business that you feel passionate about. It will be difficult to succeed if your business in not in alignment with your goals or values. Someone may advise you to look for a business that has the best statistical chance of making money, rather than one you feel excited about being involved in. They may tell you that this is the safer and more practical path. But when you are doing something that you feel excited about, it doesn’t feel like work. It may take a lot of effort, but the enjoyment and satisfaction will more than make up for it.

Have a clear vision at all times. In order to be successful, you must have a plan. This seems simple and obvious, and yet I regularly speak to entrepreneurs who seem to have no plan. They start to move in one direction, but then become distracted by another opportunity. They never travel forward, but end up moving back and forth, or side to side. If you have a clear vision of what you want to do, stay on course! Have a goal, and put all of your attention on achieving it.

Make sure that you put action behind your ideas. Many business owners come up with a multitude of good ideas. This is the fun part of running a business, and it does require creativity. But if you want to be successful, you have to act upon those ideas. New ideas generally sound thrilling. We can see the potential for making a lot of money and become excited. However, turning this great idea into revenue may take a lot of work. The amount of effort needed can be overwhelming, so the tendency is to procrastinate, and they are never implemented. Instead we think of new ideas for making a million dollars. Eventually we forget about the idea, or at least push it into background. This is a waste of creative energy. Coming up with new ideas is certainly important, but you cannot profit from them unless you turn them into something concrete.

Spend your time making money. Many business owners spend too much of their time doing things that don’t generate revenue. My advice is that they should delegate work that they don’t need to do themselves. By outsourcing mundane duties (accounting, administration, etc.) you can spend your time on the tasks that will bring in money – planning, meeting with clients, training employees, and so forth. These days it is easy to outsource work to virtual professionals.

Don’t spread yourself too thin. If you do, it will very difficult to accomplish any of your goals. Focus your attention on one or two projects at a time. If you try to do too many things at once, you may not get anything wrapped up and put away. Even if you eventually get things completed, you’ll always have a lot of unfinished projects. This can be very frustrating and demoralizing.

If you want to become successful in business, follow my advise. Find something you love doing, make a practical plan, act on your ideas, and be efficient about expending your energy. These are the key ingredients for success.
